Brownie Painting Badge Activity

Our troop is working on the painting badge this week.  The first step to earning the badge is to discover various types of paintings and use those styles for inspiration.  We are not incorporating a field trip into this badge, so we won't be visiting a museum.  I thought about bringing in an art appreciation book and showing the girls the various styles.  I decided that might hold their attention about 30 seconds at best and that we needed something much more engaging.

I decided that we would play an active game with small versions of paintings in 4 distinct styles.  There are many more styles and some seem to overlap a bit to my novice eyes.  I made sure to choose styles (and examples) that are very easy to spot.  I collected examples of each style and put them together in collages or printing.  I've included:
  • Pop Art
  • Impressionism
  • Cubism
  • Realism.
You can download and print these collages for use in any activity that you like.  Just click on the pictures below to download the full res files.

Here's how we are using them.  We will have an "art museum gallery" divided into four sections, each labeled with a painting style.  I plan to just put up 4 pieces of paper.  I will choose one example of each style to show the girls and put them in the proper section of the gallery.  The girls will be divided into teams and given the remaining cut out paintings to put up in the gallery.  We will do this as a relay race between and see which team can get all of their paintings displayed properly.

Do you have any other ideas for how to use these paintings with the girls?

Colorado Flood Relief Sock Drive

This post is a bit different because it does not include a printable file that you would use without changes.  Our Brownie troop is having a sock drive to benefit those affected by the floods in our area.  I thought I'd spread the word on the off chance that any of you are in the local area and would like to donate.

I also want to share with you that a sock drive is a great way to help those in need at any time.  They are small, portable, and inexpensive.  If you have use for a similar flyer, you can download this one as either a .png or .svg file and edit it as needed.  :)

Kaper Badges

I got the idea for these kaper badges a A Life in Balance.  I love the idea because the girls can easily remember their assigned job for each meeting and I don't have to haul a big poster board kaper chart with me!  :)

I found badge holders with lanyards at JoAnn in the teacher's section.  They were $6 for a pack of 12.  Even better with a coupon, of course.  They come with cardboard inserts that can be written on or decorated.  I printed out my designs and glued them to the cardboard and slipped them in the holders.  Very easy and I think they look great.

We are Brownies this year, so I grabbed some Brownie badge images from the badge explorer page, and added the kaper names I wanted.  We've decided to do proper flag ceremonies at our meetings this year, so I have a number of badges for that.  All of our girls will be responsible for cleaning up, so I just have an inspector to make sure everything looks great before we leave.

I included the flag ceremony commands, Girl Scout promise, and Girl Scout law on the back of the corresponding badges.  That way, the girls will have a handy reference if they forget the words.
